The song which i like always

It was composed by Elizabeth Cecelia Douglas Clephane http://www.cyberhymnal.org said her profile:-Born: June 18, 1830, Edinburgh, Scotland.Died: February 19, 1869, Bridgend House, near Melrose, Roxburghshire, Scotland.Buried: St. Cuthbert’s, Edinburgh, Scotland. Elizabeth was the third daughter of Andrew Clephane, Sheriff of Fife and Kinross. She lived most of her life in Melrose, Scotland, about 30 miles southeast of Edinburgh. She spent most of her money on charitable causes, and was known locally as “The Sunbeam.”Clephane’s hymns appeared posthumously, almost all for the first time, in the Family Treasury (1872), under the general title of “Breathings on the Border.”

I could not forget the days when we visited Delhi as an excursion group from my College way back in 2003, this beautiful song was sung at Mizoram House and it was nice to hear it and its lyrics were very matching with the weather condition(specially 1st Stanza) under the Delhi Hot Summer Sunday. The Stanza which i like most is the last stanza a 'I take, O cross, thy shadow for my abiding place;I ask no other sunshine than the sunshine of His face;Content to let the world go by to know no gain or loss,My sinful self my only shame, my glory all the cross.'. Its true, the life of our world is going day by day and it has been changing more and more, but amidst these web of life our Glory is still the Cross ad it will be always forever more.

Here is the full lyrics:

Beneath the cross of Jesus I fain would take my stand,
The shadow of a mighty rock within a weary land;
A home within the wilderness, a rest upon the way,
From the burning of the noontide heat, and the burden of the day.

O safe and happy shelter, O refuge tried and sweet,
O trysting place where Heaven’s love and Heaven’s justice meet!
As to the holy patriarch that wondrous dream was given,
So seems my Savior’s cross to me, a ladder up to heaven.

There lies beneath its shadow but on the further side
The darkness of an awful grave that gapes both deep and wide
And there between us stands the cross two arms outstretched to save
A watchman set to guard the way from that eternal grave.

Upon that cross of Jesus mine eye at times can see
The very dying form of One Who suffered there for me;
And from my stricken heart with tears two wonders I confess;
The wonders of redeeming love and my unworthiness.

I take, O cross, thy shadow for my abiding place;
I ask no other sunshine than the sunshine of His face;
Content to let the world go by to know no gain or loss,
My sinful self my only shame, my glory all the cross.
